Chevrolet Spark Facelift Launched @ INR 3.16 Lakhs

Small car segment has to be the hottest segment of the Indian car market with majority of the sales coming from it. Manufacturers are trying hard to get a bigger chunk of the Indian car sales by introducing new and refreshed cars in the small car market. Maruti Suzuki’s Alto has been ruling the small car segment since almost a decade now and other small car manufacturers have been trying hard to grab a chunk of sales from the Alto hatchback.

Latest in this segment are the all new Maruti Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon, both of which promise stellar fuel economy figures and are high on features. While the recently introduced Alto 800 has taken the small car segment by storm, with more than 20000 bookings already registered, the Hyundai Eon isn’t doing as good as Hyundai would had hoped for. We are hearing from the car buyers that an anemic engine and a ‘not so powerful’ AC are the sore points of that package.

Back in the first half of this decade, when Alto had just started picking up sales, Daewoo Matiz used to be a great challenger to the now high selling car. Daewoo went bankrupt and saw GM taking over it. The Matiz went out of production and Alto’s life became a lot easier. However, Chevrolet introduced a highly revamped Matiz which was christened as the Spark in Indian car market.

Now, the Spark had started looking a tad boring and Chevrolet India will introduce the Spark facelift to the Indian car market today.

Chevrolet, in an attempt to give Spark a family look, has pasted a two piece front grill on the little car. The Chevrolet Spark facelift also gets revised headlamps, new fog lamps and a new front bumper.

Rear too gets a revised boot lid, new tail lamp motif and a revised rear bumper.

The Spark also gets revamped interiors with new seat upholstery and door pads.

Chevrolet India has also endowed some of the interior bits with chrome garnishing. The Spark facelift gets a 2 DIN Audio system with CD/USB/AUX compatibility.

Other than this, the updated car also sports a new instrument cluster which seems to be a desperate attempt to look new age.

Paint options for Chevrolet Spark facelift are- Sandrift Grey, Linen Beige, Caviar Black, Velvet Red, Misty Lake and Summit White.

The car continues to be powered by a 1 liter, 4 cylinder petrol engine that pumps out a power-torque output of 63 bhp-90 Nm.  This makes the car more powerful than both the Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon. However, ARAI figures show that the Spark is offers a much lower fuel economy than the Alto 800 and Eon. It doesn’t takes a genius to tell that the small car buyer is more concerned about fuel economy than outright power and this alone gives the Alto 800 and the Eon an upper hand. Also, Maruti and Hyundai have a wider spread after sales network then Chevrolet and again, this is an area where Chevrolet India needs to focus on.
