Mercedes-Benz India yesteday launched the ‘much anticipated’ new 2014 E-Class in the country.
Mr. Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented on the launch of the new E-Class, “The new E-Class with its blend of stunning new design idiom, pioneering Intelligence Assistance Systems, exemplary safety and comfort features, luxurious appointments and best in class modern range of infotainment systems, creates a whole new benchmark in the luxury full-size segment. With more than 2000 parts and components used, the new E-Class undoubtedly is the ‘Best E-Class ever’ and reiterates Mercedes-Benz’s prowess as the pioneers of technical innovations towards safety, design, performance and comfort. Its new emotive design reinforced with the Intelligence Assistance Systems, reaffirms the E-Class’ position as the most sought after luxury sedan in its segment. The new E-Class is a completely high-tech package–and a very attractively packaged one at that”.
Underscoring the importance of the new E-Class in Mercedes-Benz India’s product portfolio, Mr. Eberhard Kern further elaborated, “The E-Class has been the most successful vehicle for Mercedes-Benz globally with more than 11 million units sold. In India too, the E-Class has been the most sold luxury sedan ever and hence, is a very important product in our portfolio, playing a vital role in the product strategy of Mercedes-Benz India. Since its introduction in India, we have sold more than 23,000 units of the E-Class, which is by far the highest for any single model for Mercedes-Benz sold in the country. 2013 is the year of offensive for Mercedes-Benz India and the launch of the new E-Class further reiterates our promise of bringing fascinating cars, presenting unparalleled luxury retail network, providing memorable brand experience and optimized cost of ownership, for the valued customers of the Three Pointed Star in India.”
Exterior: The new front-end design and the modifications are in line with the Mercedes-Benz’s all new design philosophy. It reinterprets the classical design values of the brand by infusing emotionally appealing contours to make the car a class act. The result is a refined and sporty appearance. The front of the new E-Class has been completely revised with new single headlamps. Flowing light elements within the headlamps ensures that the “four-eyed” look which is typical of the E-Class is retained.
The fascinating full LED headlamps are available for the first time in the new E-Class. The radiator with central Star, introduced for the first time in the E-Class, lends an independent and sportier front-end look. The bonnet and front bumper have also been completely redesigned. A new feature line runs below the structure from the rear door through to the tail light. The new E-Class looks more elongated and elegant, yet at the same time both dynamic and composed. At the rear, the lights and bumper have also been revised. The new horizontally structured LED tail lights with new two-tone look emphasize the width, and with fibre optics create a characteristic night design. The 17-inch or 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with a high-sheen finish appropriately showcase the class and sportiness.
Interiors: The interiors of the new E-Class come with high quality appointments. A new interior trim line ‘open pore ash wood trim’ on the dashboard is a first in the luxury sedan segment in India. The special treated brushed open pore oakwood gives the new E-Class a modern and stylish ambiance. Brushed oakwood has a natural matt finish and is used for contemporary high end furniture and interiors. A high-quality silver chrome frame, the ambient lighting beneath the dashboard trim and the four door trim strips, augments the mood inside the E-Class altogether. The memory seats with lumbar support raise the comfort level inside the car. The premium ARTICO man-made leather lends to the high class quality of the upholstery. The driver’s seat and the front passenger’s seat have memory package and can also be electrically adjusted for height, backrest angle and seat cushion angle. The COMAND Online multimedia system for the E-Class with 17.8 cm high-resolution colour display, internet connectivity with limited range of handsets, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and hard-disc navigation makes the car a compelling proposition for the discerning customers. New E-Class’ COMAND function has the most advanced telematics function and navigation covering a vast range of points of interests like gas stations, ATMs, hospitals, restaurants, hotels et al; and also have a storage space of 10 GB.
Intelligence Assistance Systems: The new E-Class gives comes with the new Mercedes-Benz Intelligence Assistance Systems that comprises a host of technological innovations and advancements that makes driving the new E-Class enjoyable. The Intelligence Assistant Systems comprises Eco Start Stop function as standard, Intelligent Lighting Systems featuring variable light distribution with cornering function, reversing camera, Attention Assist, COMAND Online with remote control and a tyre pressure loss warning system.
Safety: To start with, the new E-Class comes with as many as 8 airbags. There is an adaptive dual stage airbags for driver and front passenger; Side impact air-bags for driver and front passenger and window airbags. Features like the Anti-Skid Resistance (ASR); Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Brake Assist (BA) helps the driver to have a total control of the vehicle on road.
The E-Class comes with a host of famed Mercedes-Benz optimized systems like the PRE-SAFE® technology and NECK PRO – crash responsive head restraints for front seats provides an excellent comfort and safety. Also forming part of the standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST, to warn drivers about inattentiveness and drowsiness. Belt tensioner and belt force limiter for driver, front passenger and outboard rear seat passengers and three stage impact protection front crash structure benchmarks the car’s safety enrichments. Intelligent Light System comes with a variable light distribution with cornering function, that helps in adapting to any road conditions during night driving, making the drive safer, and this is complemented by Adaptive High Beam with automatic switching between high and low beam. The Active Bonnet is also a unique safety feature in the E-Class that enhances pedestrian safety.
Convenience: Other unique features included in the E-Class are the panoramic sunroof giving an unhindered view of the sky. The E-Class boasts of the largest sunroof in the segment. The “Active Parking Assist” system with integrated PARKTRONIC provides an unmatched convenience to the driver. Equipped with reversing cameras the technology enables the driver with information for the most suitable parking space. It is additionally equipped to help with active steering intervention, creating a more reliable mechanism for better driving comfort. The E-Class also comes with a full-sized spare wheel which is best suited for the Indian road conditions and provides peace of mind, especially on long drives. The E-Class’ 540 liters boot size is a benchmark in the segment even though a full size spare wheel is offered as standard with the car.
Fuel Efficiency: The fuel efficiency of the new E-Class 200 CGI petrol has been enhanced by 8% to 13.8 kmpl, making it best in class; while the torque has been increased by 15 nm. The new E 200 CGI four cylinder petrol engine with direct injection, variable valve control and turbo charging boasts better output and torque. The multiple direct petrol injection with fast-switching piezo injectors optimizes air/fuel mixture, facilitating complete fuel combustion. Reduced engine weight plus the lower internal friction also contributes to lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission provide significant advantages in terms of efficiency. The use of torsion damper ensures comfortable vehicle operation even at lower engine speeds. This lowers engine speeds without compromising comfort and contributes to fuel economy. Efficient vibration damping in the transmission ensures an even faster response to the accelerator.
The new E-Class consists of outstanding aerodynamic qualities with a Cd value 0.26 – 0.28 which adds to the vehicles fuel efficiency. The vehicle is also equipped with the now famous Mercedes-Benz ECO start/stop function as standard to reduce fuel consumption. A combination of all these features makes the new E-Class not only the best in class fuel efficient car, but also one of the most Green and environment friendly Luxury Saloon in the market. The large 80 litres fuel tank of the E-Class ensures that the E 200 CGI petrol covers 1100 kms and the E 250 CDI diesel covers 1380 kms with a full tank of fuel.
Power & Torque: The new E-Class is unrivalled in this segment with its variety and innovations. The E 250 CDI diesel is equipped with V4 engine with a displacement of 2143 CC which generates best in class torque of 500 Nm @ 1600-1800 rpm and a rated output of 150 Kw @ 4200 rpm. The vehicle attains the speed of 0-100 km/h in a mere 7.5 seconds. The E 200 CGI petrol has a displacement of 1991 CC which generates 300 Nm of torque at 1200-4000 rpm which is best in class again, and helps the vehicle to attain the speed from 0-100 km/h in a mere 7.9 seconds. The rated output for the E-Class 200 CGI is 135 kW @ 5500 rpm.
The price of the new E 200 CGI (Petrol) is Rs. 41.50 lakh and the price of E 250 CDI Avantgarde (Diesel) is Rs 44.48 lakh. There are also 100 units of limited edition of E 250 CDI priced at Rs 49.90 lakh. All Prices are ex-Showroom Delhi.
