Is this the new Harley Davidson for India?

Harley Davidson 500 India

Now forgotten, but going back 6 months when there were rumours aplenty on Harley Davidson planning entry level V-Twin cruisers in the capacity of 400-500cc for the Indian market. The speculations on the motorcycle were dismissed even quicker than it came up, until now.

Thanks to KpZen- a Team-bhp member from Haryana, while on his way to work spotted two cruiser test mules on the highway. The design does manage to rattle our guesses- people might assume it for the soon to be launched Hyosung GV250 Aquila- but looking at the size of the cylinders, it certainly doesn’t look like a 250 to us. Neither does the design resemble or come anywhere close to the likes of Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki or a Kawasaki.

Now this leads us to believe that this has to be the cruiser from Harley Davidson. A few visual clues to support our claim- have a close look at the front suspension- it does remind you of the Harley Davidson Superlow XL883L. The reflectors on the forks too are typical Harley Davidson.

Considering the XL883L is the cheapest Harley offering in India, the new motorcycle could well be sharing the parts bin with the Superlow effecting in economies of scale for both motorcycles. The exhaust does look crude, but we feel it’s more of a ploy to hide the identity cards.

Harley Davidson 500 India-3

At the moment, a Harley Davidson is our best guess and if it turns out to be true, then as speculated in the original news- we could well see a Harley priced between the 3 to 4 lac price bracket. This would very well work to grab attention of buyers who would be wanting to buy a motorcycle as a lifestyle and be looking at the Ninja 250R/300, KTM Duke 390 and the soon to be launched Hyosung GV250 Aquila.

The launch speculations were pointed at the year 2014, but at the moment- we can only wait and watch the drama unfold.

  1. note down the temporary registration number, go to the RTO and give 100 bucks and he’ll give you a copy of the application form for registration submitted by the owner/seller/manufacturer
