Japanese car maker Nissan join hands with Renault to open its manufacturing facility in Chennai from where it will roll out the latest generation of its compact car ‘Micra’ for the Indian market. The facility will be inaugurated by Carlos Ghosh, the Chairman & CEO of Renault- Nissan alliance on March 17 and the Micra is expected to roll out of this facility in May 2010.

The new facility in which Rs. 4,000 crore has been infused with the production capacity standing at four lakh units will be one of the five units in the world where Nissan’s global compact car will be manufactured. Nissan had also earlier stated that it will shift the production of Micra in UK to India which will be used as export base for the company. 

For the domestic market, Nissan had announced that it plans to have nine models in India by 2012, out of which five would be manufactured locally. Currently it sells only two models, the Teana sedan and SUV Xtrail in India. Nissan had said it aims to achieve a market share of 5.5% in India in the future.
