A netbook is what you want Arn. Has better battery life.
The tablets arent great when it comes to file transfers both hardware wise and speed wise

Does it make sense to have a SMALL (read small display) laptop and full size keyboard + large screen where it is most likely to be used?

Just asking - I don't use one and as I have desktops at home and at the workplace, did not feel the need for one. For practical use on the road (I guess I'd look for good internet, reasonable storage, firewire port to download a days video recording fast and absolutely NO games) - how would a tablet compare to a full fledged laptop?

Have seen the HCL ME tablet and I heard a 3G USB internet can be connected to it. Its got both mini USB and USB 2.0. Not sure about data transfer will check though.

Below is what I found!

Thanks for all the inputs, guys.

I'm not looking for any immediate purchase. I've been thinking for some time about mounting a HD camcorder to record a full day's ride, but such a device would have to have the memory transferred to an external drive at the end of the day - for which I'd need some sort of mobile computer, among other things. But that project's a long way off, as of now.

HD camcorder = GB's of data.. You would need to transfer it quite a lot of times if you decide to record in HD..

Yes I know. Almost 70 odd GB/day of riding at HD. That's why a fast transfer speed is vital.

PS: day = 24hrs :P

Well you can get faster transfer speed but how many times will you wish to do it in a day..?? I am sure not more then twice..
Unless you get a memory card that reads 128GB.. :D

Yeah, but that 128GB card would cost serious dosh, especially if you want one with fast data transfer. A standalone HD is a lot more bang for the buck.

The point about the days recording is not about just how many times, but how long it would take to transfer half a day's recording. Obviously, the faster the better.

if i am not wrong then a 1X card = 150KB/sec. And the max USB 2.0 can support is 200X=30MBps then again this is theoretical speeds and practical well you know how low it can get.. So 30GB of data at 20MBps..?? I am sure you can work out..

Arn,

If you're planning to edit the HD videos, netbooks might prove to be underspec-ed for the purpose.
Netbooks would do only if you plan to edit the videos on your desktops.
I like 'em Naked.

My thoughts

No video editing on the go. Simply, transfer from the recording device to an external drive to free storage space on the recording device, no more. Net connectivity only to check mail, and of course google maps (far better than the existing GPS maps).

Fortunately, I don't need it right now. I've noticed that procrastination while planning computer purchases is very beneficial :P
