Chrysler owner Fiat plans to build a high-end Maserati SUV -- a Cayenne fighter -- in Detroit at the plant that churns out the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

Bloomberg News reports that a person familiar with the plan says a concept of Maserati's first-ever SUV will be shown next month at the Frankfurt auto show. The Modena, Italy, brand that sells $100K and up luxury GT cars and the gorgeous Quattroporte sedans now is betting it can sell an SUV "Imported from Detroit."

A Maserati has been talked about for years, and the photo above is of a concept for one -- the Kubang GT concept on display at the Detroit auto show in 2003.

The SUV will be built at Chrysler's Jefferson North plant in the Motor City, the person told Bloomberg, and will be based on the redone Jeep Grand Cherokee, a platform that in turn has roots with former Chrysler owner Daimler, and powered by a version of Chrysler's Pentastar V-6.

Bloomberg notes that while project makes business sense, it risks turning off Maserati loyalists, particularly those who recall the ill-fated and tasteless TC from Chrysler and Maserati in the 1980s -- conceived at a time when the Italian maker was in financial trouble. It was the auto equivalent of a classy actress taking a role in a schlocky B-movie because she can't pay the rent. Fiat took over Maserati in 1993.

A clear target of the new SUV would be the Porsche Cayenne -- based on VW's mass-market Touareg, but a global sales and profit success for Porsche at $85,ooo and up, way up. It is by far Porsche's best-selling model in the U.S. and sparks little comment about whether it is a "real" Porsche.

Maserati wouldn't comment to Bloomberg ahead of Frankfurt, but CEO Harald Wester told the news service in March, "The important point is that whatever Maserati we launch will be a product that respects the entire heritage, image, characteristics and customer expectations of this brand."

A big question will be what's under the hood -- a version of the Hemi V-8, or one or more of Maserati's Ferrari-based engines?

Fiat is trying to boost Maserati from a niche brand to a more broad-based luxury nameplate and the SUV is just one of the new products in the works.

Porsche Cayenne finally gets a competitor (BMW X6 could be counted as one, but it's not exactly an SUV is it?)

Maserati (a Fiat Group brand) is planning an SUV based on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee (Chrysler Brand; Chrysler is majority owned by Fiat now) to eat up Cayenne's market share.

They are expected to showcase a concept in next month's Frankfurt auto show.

Hoping the designers manage to migrate Maserati's beauty onto the SUV body shape.

Can you post the link, if you can find it?
I remember seeing artist impressions all over the net, don't remember a spy pic..

Although they did come up with an SUV concept in 2003 (Detroit Show probably), called the Kubang GT... Never went into production

Maserati have unveiled their SUV Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The designers have retained the Maserati grille.
In contrast to their cars, the SUV concept has shows a lot of sharp edges in addition to the flared wheel arches. The rear looks too similar to the Ausi Q5, in my opinion. All in all, a brilliant job, considering that it is based on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
They have retained the Kubang name and it does look like a newer version of their previous concept (see above post).

Posted Image M - Kubang
As it was already in the news that Exoctic Super cars maker Maserati, were talking about an SUV, and here they now present  sports luxury SUV.
Expecting one of the most brilliant Sports utility Vehicle, Kubang, makes its entry into the real world at the Frankfurt Auto Show, being held in Germany. The car seems to perform brilliantly both on the road and off-road. It truly lived up to its character name of an SUV. Now, Maserati has announced that they are going to stray off their exclusive luxury sports car range and take a share of the SUV market.
Maserati had come up with plans for the Kubang way back in 2003, the new car is now ready and on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Maserati say that the Kubang will come with their sports car DNA which means that it should be fantastic to drive on the road. The Kubang is not just an SUV taken from another manufacturer and rebadged as a Maserati. The styling, suspension, brakes, steering, automatic transmission and engine are all exclusively designed and built from ground up for the Kubang by the Maserati Product Development in Modena.

The Kubang will undoubtedly stand out on the road with its distinctive styling and since it is a Maserati it will most certainly be a hoot to drive, on the road at least
