Volvo Electrifies India: EX30 Confirmed for 2025 Launch, Signaling Major EV Push

Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo is shifting gears in India, marking a significant milestone with over 1000 car deliveries and setting its sights firmly on the electric vehicle (EV) future. In a recent media briefing in Delhi, Martin Persson, Head of Volvo Cars for Asia Pacific (excluding China), dropped exciting news for environmentally conscious Indian car buyers: the arrival of the EX30, Volvo’s smallest electric SUV yet, in the Indian market by 2025.

Sustainability Focus and Competitive Price

Persson highlighted the EX30’s eco-credentials, stating, “It’s our most sustainable car ever, with a significantly lower CO2 footprint than other cars.” This focus on sustainability, coupled with an estimated price range of Rs. 40.00 Lakh – Rs. 45.00 Lakh, positions the EX30 as an attractive option for those seeking a luxurious and eco-friendly driving experience.

Going Green with Options

Internationally, the EX30 offers two battery pack options:

  • A 51 kWh battery with LFP chemistry cells, targeting a claimed range of 344 kilometers (WLTP cycle). This option prioritizes affordability and eco-friendliness.
  • A larger 69 kWh battery with NMC cells, promises a range of up to 480 kilometers (WLTP cycle). This variant caters to drivers seeking a longer range between charges.

India: A Market Poised for Growth

While India is currently Volvo’s smallest market in the region, Persson sees immense potential. He anticipates India surpassing other regional markets in terms of EV growth,  propelling it into a significant market for Volvo in the future. This confidence is reflected in Volvo’s commitment to launching one new electric vehicle per year in India.

A Wave of Electric SUVs

The EX30 is just the beginning of Volvo’s electric vehicle offensive in India. Following the EX30’s launch, Persson confirmed the introduction of the larger EX90 SUV. He also hinted at the possibility of introducing other body styles beyond SUVs in the future, catering to a wider range of customer preferences.

Electrification in the Premium Segment:

Persson predicts faster adoption of electric vehicles in the premium car segment compared to the mass market. This aligns with Volvo’s strategy, which focuses on premium electric vehicles.

Presently Volvo sells two electric cars in the Indian market, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge.
